I think you made a good choice to modify your first neutral. Great going that you are target to finish step two!
The first choices I pulled from my stash. Had to purchase the b/w's but am really glad I decided to do that.

These look great. I also changed my neutrals from a solid white to small black on white. Still deciding on the black - solid black batik or small white on black. Just starting my MQ. Had to finish Christmas projects first. :-)
